Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease that attacks and destroys the myelin sheath (fatty substance protecting the nerve fibers) in the central nervous system. It can cause permanent and irreversible damage to the nervous system. When any part of the myelin sheath or nerve fiber is damaged or destroyed, nerve impulses traveling to and from the brain and spinal cord are distorted or interrupted, producing a variety of symptoms.
Traditional Chinese Medicine focuses not just on one symptom, but rather on treating patterns of symptoms and addressing the root cause of that pattern. Because there is a wide range of physical neurological symptoms that occur with MS, the intensity, frequency, and even the actual symptoms can be different for each person. Therefore, each acupuncture prescription or herbal formula will be different and unique for each patient dealing with MS.
Berkeley Community Acupuncture is dedicated to helping people manage and cope with symptoms of MS. Our Clinic will open its doors every second and fourth Saturday of every month for people who suffer from MS to receive free acupuncture treatments.
